Museum to remember the eleven Schill'schen Officers
In 1809, 11 Prussian officers were shot in Wesel, because they had joined a resistance from the Prussian Major Ferdinand von Schill against Napoleon. After their imprisonment in Stalsund, they were brought to fortress in Wesel that belonged to the Prussian Empire at the time and sentenced. The officers were kept in the main gate building of the citadel until they were shot on September 16, 1809.
In the casemates of the citadel main gate, the authentic place of their imprisonment, documentation shows the background and connections of the former events.
To remember the eleven officers on their day of execution, a monument was created on March 31, 1835 at the place of their execution on the Lippe meadow according to the designs by Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
