Black Water heath pond

The "Schwarzes Wasser" (Black Water) heath pond is one of Wesel's most popular local recreation areas.

The name Black Water comes from the brown-black colour of the water, which is due to the humic substances washed out of the moorland vegetation. The area has been designated as a nature reserve since 1936, making it one of the oldest in North Rhine-Westphalia.

This last heath pond on the Lower Rhine was formed during the last ice age.

A marvellous circular trail around the Schwarze Wasser, which is also part of the Hohe Mark Nature Park, invites you to explore the unique flora and fauna.
